A Bit of Earth

Chronicles of my plant growing obsession…

Orchid & Avocado updates

I was watering my plants today when I noticed that my orchid has:

1) new sprouts on the existing stalks
-and-
2) a brand new stalk

I am so excited!!!

Also, the avocado seems to have survived its transplant. It’s sooo huge, I hope we end up moving soon because I can barely imagine how to move it now, let alone after it gets any bigger!

Ficus TooLittle

I’ve had it in way too big a pot and it wasn’t really happy. On Sunday I was at Barnes and Noble and found these cute box kits in the clearance section that had a pot, bonsai snips, a little ceramic house and wire, for $8. Can’t pass that up! The snips are actually really sturdy.

So I just repotted the Ficus TooLittle into that pot, the size is way better. Gave it a good soaking too, and now I’ll just leave it alone for a bit and hope it perks up. It’s not doing badly or anything, it’s just not doing well. I need to mist it more often too. Lots of brown tips where new leaves should have grown. I’ll fertilize it once it has settled into this pot.

New Pictures!

Ok get ready for some craziness with the avocado. It’s SO huge!!! ;)

First though, here are pictures of my two new plants, an African Violet and a baby orchid (Cattleya), which will be orange if I’m lucky enough to get it to bloom.

Sorry I’ve been slacking.

I’ve just been so busy with wedding stuff.

Let’s see, the avocado is huge, I definitely need to get a new picture of that.

I bought a new african violet. White crinkly petals with just a touch of pink. Very pretty! Got it at Meijer’s. Also saw a bunch of pincushion plants. They’re very cool looking and very unique and will be my next purchase.

The goldfish plant is blooming again. It makes me so happy when it blooms!

New test project: I just ate a peach and put the pit in a baggy of soil then into the fridge for some cold stratification to see what happens!

Emergency Plant Surgery

Bob the cat was doing a bad bad thing and climbing all over my plant table while I wasn’t paying attention. He tripped and uprooted my jasmine bonsai, of all things. Upon investigation, I noticed the roots had grown through the screen at the bottom of the pot used for soil retention. Oops. So I carefully detached/cut the roots from the screen and potted it into a larger container. No longer bonsai style, but I think it’ll be happier this way, there will be a lot more room for the roots and it has really been trying hard to make new growth, so hopefully this will be what it needs!

I need to replant the coffee plant, it’s not happy in that tiny pot. I think I’m also going to take my succulents and put them back into individual pots, rather than the desert bowl. They’re alive..just not thriving.

I also finally just got the humidifier set up in here, hopefully that’ll help everything too!

Avocado comes out of hiding.

It’s been a while since I posted the avocado, but I just repotted it so I wanted to document it. It’s doing really well, I’m very happy about how much it’s grown!

New Plants!

I went to check out a greenhouse yesterday. Figured I have to check out all the local ones and see what’s up. I got some lavender and some applemint. I got the lavender because I’ve never had much luck growing mine indoors. Applemint I’ve never heard of but it smells delicious. I still need to repot both.

The avocado is going crazy. I think I already need to repot it. Everything else is pretty much status quo.

There’s that avocado again!

This is the first chance I’ve had to grab a picture and post it since the move. Yet again, another dramatic change! I definitely need to repot soon, but have no clue if I should keep it in a narrow pot or if the root system will spread out a lot. Anyone know what type of pot it will be happiest in?

It just keeps growing and growing!

I’ll probably have to repot it again by next week!
